There are 2 types of investors in the world, informed investors and misinformed investors, which are you?
1. Misinformed investors think that the financial “noise” that is roaming the airwaves, is real and therefore they must act on that information.
Informed investors know that such financial “noise” may be entertaining, but so is the circus. Informed investors know better, they do not act on such “noise” as it most likely will prove harmful to their financial well-being.
2. Misinformed investors believe that it makes sense to change their investments based upon the financial “noise”. A new political party in power, change your investments. Interest rates change, buy/sell your investments. Something happens to the banking industry, go ballistic!
An Informed investor will make a change to her investments based upon her life and circumstances. She will only change her investments because her financial situation has changed and she has put great thought into making a change before doing so. She knows better than to make a change based upon financial “noise” that does not pertain to her.
3. Misinformed investors believe that they must monitor their investments constantly. Why not? Isn’t that the purpose of a cellphone?
Informed investors know it takes time for a tree to grow. It does no good to constantly dig up the tree to check on the roots. The same applies to your investments.
4. Misinformed investors talk about their investments constantly. They use jargon that they do not clearly understand, but they sound smart.
An Informed investor understands the difference between the global economy and her personal economy. She chooses to focus on the latter.
5. Misinformed investors worry constantly about the news in some far-off part of the world and the impact that it might have on their investments.
An Informed investor focuses on what she can control such as keeping investment costs low, having a plan as to what she wants her investments to provide and most importantly, managing her behavior so that she does not get caught up in the hype of the investment markets.
6. Misinformed investors complain constantly about the ups and downs of the investment markets by focusing on this issue day by day.
The Informed investor knows that her investments and what she will enjoy from those investments, will be measured by how they perform over the years and decades.
